Where students actually struggle
Math 20-1 is the steepest single jump in the Alberta math sequence. Quadratics arrive fast, radicals and rationals stack on top, and the pace assumes 10C algebra is automatic. Students who are still thinking about each algebra step fall behind on content while doing the arithmetic.
How we teach it
We diagnose whether the problem is 20-1 content or unfinished 10C algebra — it is usually the latter. Then we drill quadratics and rational expressions to the point of fluency, because 30-1 assumes all of it.
